Man makes gruesome discovery after finding 40 dead cats 'stacked' in freezers he won in auction

A man who won two freezers in an auction made a grim discovery after finding 40 frozen dead cats inside.

The bargain hunter paid $150 (£122) for the two pieces of kitchen equipment but was stunned at what he found.

The unnamed man had gone along to the sale held by American Self-Storage Facility for abandoned storage lockers in Long Island City in the US.

But when he went to check over his purchases he found the dead animals.

Police investigators found at least 40 felines, including a skinned cat on an aluminium tray and said they were greeted with a 'smell of death'.

The purchaser, who has not been named, made the grim discovery

They said one of the freezers had the cats stacked on top of one another, according to abc7 .

While in the other, they said the cats had been individually wrapped in paper and put in plastic bags.

The cats are being taken for necropsies - autopsies for pets - by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

However the organisation has said the results will take some time as the animals will have to be thawed out.

Once police have the results they will decide whether to press charges on those responsible.

Local reports claimed the unit had been rented out by a 66-year-old woman who stopped her monthly payments in July.
