Celebs and their dogs: Louis Smith, Leona Lewis and other celebrities let their pooches take the limelight

Whether it’s their wagging tales, cheeky behaviour or fluffy cuddles, even the biggest divas can’t resist the love of a four-legged friend.

Some pups even become almost as famous as their owners themselves - from The Queen ’s corgis to Simon Cowell ’s Yorkshire terriers, Freddie, Squiddly and Diddly.

In the case of Britain’s Got Talent winners Ashleigh and Pudsey, they can even become a double act with their owners.

But some pups aren’t as lucky as to be snapped up into a __life of luxury.

So to help raise funds, charity Dog’s Trust has released new book Dogs And Their Faithful Celebrities, in which famous faces are taking the backseat to their beloved pooches...

Louis Smith and Luna

From day one husky Luna has always been a chip off the old block. Gymnast Louis, 27, recalls: “Going to pick her up and seeing straight away how she was too hyperactive and boisterous for other puppies, running at them and knocking them over.”

The pooch also knew exactly how deal with any competition for Louis’ affections. He says: “The naughtiest thing she has ever done is roll in fox poo and then shaking it off all over my girlfriend at the time.” Louis must have had some explaining to do.

Laura Whitmore and Mick Jagger

Laura's pooch likes following her round the globe

Like Strictly star Laura , 31, Maltipoo - Maltese and toy poodle cross - Mick is bit of jetsetter, coming with her on jobs. She says: “He’s a people dog and loves coming on shoots with me. He’s very small too so easy to bring on the tube and buses. He loves the studio and most places are dog-friendly. He’s just got his pet passport.” Fancy.

They even holiday together. Laura adds: “He’s come on holiday to Salcombe in Devon with me. There was a dog-friendly room in the hotel and he didn’t mind the long car journey. He loves looking out the window.”

Russell Watson and Muffin

Smitten Russell, 49, describes his dogs as his “unconditional friends”. Rescue greyhound pup Blaze was a bundle of nerves when he arrived, but Russell says: “It’s been really lovely watching him develop into a trusting, loyal and loving family pet.”

Shih tzu Muffin, meanwhile, keeps Russell on his toes, mistaking his mobile phone for a bone. He says: “It still has teeth marks on it.”

Lesley Nicol with Freddie and Bertie

Downton Abbey star and animal lover Lesley, 63, can easily tell her dogs’ personalities apart. She says of Tibetan terrier Bertie and poodle Freddie: “Bertie is a show-off, dramatic and entertaining, while Freddie is shy, joyful and loving.”

The former Strictly judge, 79, recalls: “My first memory is her leaping from the transport crate straight into my arms and just licking me all over with such excitement. She was so trusting and just so happy to have a home and someone to snuggle with.”

But she has certainly settled in. Arlene adds: “Lily is snuggly, loving and playful.”

She says: “Celeb voice wise I think the late Robin Williams would have been great. He had the crazy, funny wild side to his voice, but also that soft, gentle side and Norman has all those qualities.” What an all-rounder.

Angela Griffin and Smith

Angela says adorable Smith has a cheeky side

Despite his butter-wouldn’t-melt, adorable looks, cavapoo - poodle and Cavalier Kind Charles spaniel cross - Smith is actually quite cheeky when he’s left to his own devices.
