First look inside renovated Manchester Dogs’ Home two years after devastating fire killed 60 animals

These pictures are the first glimpse inside Manchester Dogs’ Home’s renovated buildings following a devastating fire two years ago.

Work is now complete on two blocks on the dogs’ home site, in Harpurhey, thanks to the generous donations of kind-hearted members of the public.

Each block contains 20 kennels and is used to house strays when they are first brought to the home.

When the pooches are ready to find their ‘forever homes’ they are moved over to a temporary adoption centre, which opened earlier this year.

The stray blocks are made up of swish new kennels, with stainless steel bars, resin floors and underfloor heating.

Every single dog has its own bed and water, with the feed tailored individually to each animal, reports Manchester Evening News.

The next stage of the dogs’ home renovation project will involve the creation of an entirely new adoption block.

Work is expected to start next year and the centre is being built in the car park area of the site.

Plans are also in place to develop the compound area, which is used for walking the dogs, as well as other facilities.

Steve Mapley, the dogs’ home manager, said: “It should be more comfortable and a nicer environment for the dogs.

“It has been lovely. It is good to see things are moving forward - it so much cleaner and so much brighter.

“Stray blocks are never a nice place to work, but it is a lot more pleasant now.

“So far the feedback has been really positive. The staff love the new blocks.”

He added there are currently 100 dogs on the site, with the numbers expected to rise towards Christmas time.

Hundreds of animals were rescued but around 60 were killed when a huge fire tore through the building on September 11, 2014.

Police believe the fire was started deliberately but nobody has been charged in relation to the arson attack.

A number of celebrities also chipped in during the fundraising scheme for the home, including The X Factor judge Simon Cowell and footballer Mario Balotelli.
