Pooches to undergo personality tests to enter new 'Central Bark' dog cafe to ensure they are sociable enough

A new dog cafe plans to force prospective pooches to undergo personality tests before they are admitted.

The tests to enter Central Bark will assess the dog's social skills, ensure they are not too dominant and won't be overwhelmed by the environment.

The facility will be set inside a huge 14,000 square foot warehouse in Manchester, converted into a combined dog café , grooming, kennels and day care complex.

It will be run by husband and wife team Tony and Tania Golden of Altrincham-based pet care company Manchester Dog Care - and the perks won't just be coming from caffiene.

“We want to be for the dog client side of it, but there's so many people that we have contacting us in the area who don't have dogs," explains Tony.

"We're hoping that people can come and get their 'dog boost' to help them keep going."

Originally from Vero Beach, South Carolina, the couple will be bringing a little southeastern US sunshine with them in the form of the 'Beach Dog Café', The Manchester Evening News reports.

Based in Roundthorn industrial estate by Wythenshawe hospital, the beach-themed café will feature pastel colours, bench seating, umbrellas and a sand-coloured floor to make visitors feel like they're escaping the gloomy Manchester weather.

Inside the café, people will find a range of hot food, sandwiches and artisan coffee.

Separate from the Beach Dog Café will be four dog play areas, distinguished by white picket fences, which can accommodate up to seventy dogs.

The massive space will cater for pet owners and dog-less visitors: dog owners who visit the café can let their pets loose in the play area for a small fee, while canine-fans can enter the play areas and pet the pups to their heart's content.

A central room will also provide kennels for overnight stays, while a grooming room will be on hand to pamper pooches.

As well as their usual clients, Manchester Dog Care will approach local rescue centres to arrange for guest dogs to visit the centre.

These dogs will be carefully looked after by staff, and will each wear a little T-shirt saying 'adopt me', to encourage visitors to re-home a rescue dog if they can.

But only dogs that pass a personality test will be admitted to Central Bark.

"All dogs go through an evaluation process," adds Tony.

"To make sure they're sociable, to make sure they're not dominant, to make sure they won't have an experience where they feel overwhelmed."

Doggy day care costs from £17.50, while an overnight stay in the dog hotel is £21.50. Visit manchesterdogcare.com for more information.

Central Bark aims to open the day care centre by December, and the Beach Dog Café will be up and running by January 2017.
