Today Is National Dolphin Day: Why It Matters Now More Than Ever

National Dolphin Day provides the perfect opportunity for people to become more educated about these beloved marine mammals. Interestingly, this holiday has never been officially announced by any country. Despite this, National Dolphin Day is celebrated in many nations worldwide every year on April 14.

There have been numerous awareness meetings and gatherings to honor dolphins in past years. One of the main focal points of National Dolphin Day is to discourage dolphin hunts. The unofficial holiday also provides the perfect launchpad for discussing conservation methods.

Several Dolphin Species are Endangered

Perhaps one of the best usages of National Dolphin Day is calling attention to the plight of numerous endangered species. Tourists in many areas of the world have had personal encounters with dolphins via swimming with them or watching them swim around their boat. This has raised the marine mammal’s profile and made it a favorite for many people, but it has also put dolphins at risk.

Dolphin hunting, climate change, and other environmental issues can also spell disaster for these gentle creatures — gentle creatures that are well-known to help humans in danger, according to Dr. Diana Reiss, one of the foremost dolphin experts. There are many reports of dolphins warding off sharks that were attacking people, and National Dolphin Day serves as a reminder that we need to protect them in return.

Sadly, some species numbers have dwindled so much that the threat of extinction looms large. One sad statistic listed by WWF indicates that there are believed to be only 63 Maui dolphins left in the wild. These particular sea creatures live off the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island.

Maui dolphins have become critically endangered for many reasons, including boat strikes, coastal development, and marine pollution. Perhaps the biggest dangers, though, are gill nets and trawl fishing. Since 2001, there have been at least five Maui dolphins killed by net entanglement. That number may not seem like much at first, but when you consider the fact that it accounts for 8 percent of the total species population, it becomes easy to see why National Dolphin Day and other awareness events are so important.

There are a few other species that are currently known to be endangered. The Ganges River and Indus River dolphins are both on this list. They are also two of only four dolphin species that live exclusively in fresh water. There are fewer than 3,000 dolphins in the wild between them, and these numbers continue to drop rapidly. Shockingly, some of these marine creatures are still being killed for human consumption. If this continues, the Ganges River and Indus River dolphins will all be gone, regardless of National Dolphin Day conservation efforts.

A Functionally Extinct Species

The loss of any species is a tragedy, especially when human intervention could have prevented it. The baiji dolphin makes it clear that National Dolphin Day needs to step up before another species becomes classified as functionally extinct. In only 50 years, the baiji dolphin declined from a population of 6,000 to zero, according to the conservation agency, WDC. The worst part is that mankind is directly linked to their demise.

Scientists have traced the baiji dolphin’s extinction to China’s industrialization. Since the 1950s, the area where these dolphins once lived has suffered from extreme habitat degradation. Another major contributing factor was the usage of rolling hook long-lines. To put all of this into perspective, there were 6,000 baiji dolphins in 1950, but this number fell to 13 by 1997. No baiji have been spotted since 2006, which led to them being deemed functionally extinct. This makes it clear just how quickly human actions can destroy an entire species.

Using National Dolphin Day for Good

People who are appalled by the loss of the baiji dolphin and the potential extinction of the Maui, Ganges River, and Indus River dolphins can utilize National Dolphin Day to raise awareness. You can also get involved by signing petitions, contacting appropriate government officials, and informing others about the purpose of National Dolphin Day.

Animal Adventure Park Live Cam Updates: April The Giraffe Feeling ‘Out Of It’ — Going Into Labor?

April the Giraffe’s followers continue to tune into Animal Adventure Park’s live cam on YouTube as they await the pregnant giraffe’s delivery, which should occur any time now. The birth of April’s calf has long been overdue, and the park’s keepers are keeping a close eye for any changes that might occur day in and day out.

For more than two weeks since Animal Adventure Park’s Giraffe Cam went live, the park’s official Facebook account has been providing April the Giraffe’s followers updates on a daily basis. And according to AAP’s Thursday morning update, keepers said that April has been feeling “out of it” this morning. They noted the pregnant giraffe’s distracted behavior, which is a stark contrast to her usual “inquisitive” and “treat-begging” self.

Animal Adventure Park’s latest Facebook update hasn’t provided any details as to what this “distracted” behavior could mean for April’s pregnancy. No physical changes occurred as well. Just like in the last few days, April has been showing significant bulging of the belly. Her backend is reportedly slightly damp, which AAP says is nothing to write home about. Keepers also noted that light discharge is still occurring on a daily basis.

“She is ‘out of it’ were keepers comments this morning; noting distracted behavior versus her normal inquisitive, treat begging, self. Significant bulging of the belly also noted.”

“Backend slightly damp but nothing to get excited about yet. We are still observing light discharge on a daily basis.”

Is April the Giraffe’s distracted behavior a sign that she could give birth any second now? Remember, anxieties among pregnant women are common especially during the third trimester. The nature of a pregnant giraffe’s worries might differ from those of a pregnant human, but they are worries, nonetheless. On top of April’s raging pregnancy hormones, her body might be telling her that she’s about to have a baby, and that alone could lead to anxiety.

Animal Adventure Park’s morning update also came with a new photo, which shows April looking a bit “out of it,” as has been noted.

“Cool morning temperatures will delay yard time, but this afternoon we expect to do a Q&A session from the giraffe deck with Oliver.”

The aforementioned update also announced that cool morning temperatures will delay yard time. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Animal Adventure Park has been giving April the Giraffe some extended yard time, which might have contributed to his sunny behavior in the past few days. That said, it’s entirely possible that April’s “distracted” behavior might have been caused by the cold weather. Her keepers are keeping a close eye on her so it should not be any cause for worry. As usual, you can keep a close eye on April as well by streaming Animal Adventure Park’s live cam on YouTube.

Breaking News……. April the giraffe is still pregnant. Resume normal operations. pic.twitter.com/MLtMTsCjYl

— Jayson Luber (@Denver7Traffic) April 13, 2017

AAP also announced that there will be a Q&A session at the Giraffe Deck with April the Giraffe’s partner, Oliver, who fathered the calf she’s now carrying. As per latest update, here’s your chance to ask questions you might have so don’t hesitate to post your questions in the comments section of Animal Adventure Park’s latest Facebook post.

At present, Animal Adventure Park’s live cam is still getting a lot of visitors on YouTube. The amount of traffic has slight declined in the past few days, presumably on account of the fact that some of April’s followers are starting to lose their patience. It’s hardly surprising, considering that they’ve been waiting for April to give birth for more than two weeks.

To top it off, some are even mulling over the possibility that April the Giraffe’s pregnancy is just a hoax. The park’s official Facebook admin, however, had something to say about the “fake news” claims in reference to April’s pregnancy.

“A quick biology lesson – animals do not develop milk unless supporting a pregnancy. Furthermore – giraffes do not develop large udders like cattle etc, so to see this much development truly suggests calving in the near future.”

For now, there’s nothing we can do but wait for April to finally go on labor. If you don’t feel like streaming Animal Adventure Park’s live cam (shown below), you can also subscribe to AAP’s Labor Text alert (if you haven’t already) to receive exclusive updates about April’s progress.

Do you think April the Giraffe’s behavior this morning is a clear sign that she’s going to give birth soon? Is this the day it finally happens? Stay tuned.

Animal Adventure Park Live Cam: April The Giraffe’s Calf Just Made A ‘Significant Movement’ — Is It Time?

Animal Adventure Park’s live cam continues to keep thousands of followers engaged on their screens as they await April the Giraffe’s much-anticipated delivery. The birth of April’s baby shouldn’t take long now. In fact, the latest AAP update posted on Facebook Wednesday evening has noted that April the Giraffe’s baby has made a “significant movement” early today.

This is big on account of the fact that nothing much has changed in April the Giraffe’s physical condition in the last few days. But with her baby giraffe getting antsy inside her mother’s belly, there’s no better time than now to tune into Animal Adventure Park’s live cam.

“All remains as reported earlier.”

“Big and happy. We did note significant movement from the calf today during observation times.”

“April had a few visitors (industry friends) from out of state that were shocked to see just how large she is. The camera just doesn’t capture actual size/proportions.”

“At present, April continues to keep her followers guessing, but Animal Adventure Park’s keeper, Jordan Patch, and their resident veterinarian, Dr. Tim, insists that everything is running as expected. April has been showing all the signs that she’s about ready to give birth. As per AAP’s Wednesday morning update, the pregnant giraffe’s physical condition ‘remains the same,’ her condition is still ‘on point,’ and she is being kept comfortable at all times.”

The latest AAP update also showed the page’s followers a short video of April the Giraffe being offered a carrot, which she ate with much enthusiasm (and affording Carrot Cam viewers a closer look at the giraffe’s mug!).

As is typical of all pregnant animals, April the Giraffe’s udders remain full to bursting. And speaking of udders, AAP’s keeper recently gave “hoaxers” and fake news peddlers spreading fake pregnancy stories a piece of his mind.

“A quick biology lesson – animals do not develop milk unless supporting a pregnancy. Furthermore – giraffes do not develop large udders like cattle etc, so to see this much development truly suggests calving in the near future.”

To drive home the point, Animal Adventure Park’s Wednesday morning update showed a close-up photo of April’s udders, which you can see below.

Meanwhile, April the Giraffe is still getting extended yard time, which is a good move on the part of the keepers considering the current weather. If anything, the exercise, the fresh air, and the sun might have contributed to April’s sunny behavior lately. Also, photos and videos of April basking in the open are a sight to behold. She might as well make the most of it since she will likely stay indoors once she’s given birth to her calf.

April The Giraffe Remains “Big and Happy” https://t.co/XsCYzClLRX pic.twitter.com/LrzK6o1w0W

— CBSDenver (@CBSDenver) April 13, 2017

On Tuesday morning, Animal Adventure Park posted a photo of April enjoying yard time. As you can see in the photo below, our favorite giraffe is clearly enjoying the outdoors. It might have improved her appetite as well, which is beneficial for the baby.

As most of those who have been tuning into Animal Adventure Park’s live cam on a daily basis, April has been having contractions for some time now, which is a sign that she is going to deliver her baby soon. Once her labor begins, she is expected to pace around the room, swish her tail excessively, and show signs of “pushing contractions.”

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, giraffes don’t usually show signs of labor, but viewers will know for a fact that it has begun once the pregnant giraffe breaks water and hooves start to appear from her hind quarters.

In light of her calf’s aforementioned “significant movement,” the birth of April the Giraffe’s calf draws ever closer.

To monitor the progress of April the Giraffe’s pregnancy in real time, you can tune into Animal Adventure Park’s live cam below.

Animal Adventure Park Owner Speaks After April The Giraffe Gives Birth To Baby Boy As Millions Watch Live

Less than 24 hours after millions watched live as 15-year-old April the giraffe gives birth to a baby boy Saturday morning, the Animal Adventure Park owner, Jordan Patch, speaks about the giraffe’s successful delivery, Spectrum News reports.

Patch stated that around 9:55 a.m. on April 15, April the giraffe delivered a baby boy after a long-awaited birth. He went on to say that around 7:20 a.m., Animal Adventure Park staff began to notice the starting process of April the giraffe’s delivery, seeing a “sack hanging from the back end.”

Afterward, a zoo spokesperson made an announcement on social media, stating that April the giraffe — an African animal who had been pregnant for 16 months with her fourth calf — was in labor.

The Animal Adventure Park owner was visibly elated, also announcing April the giraffe’s labor via Facebook Live as he was en route to the zoo.

— Newsweek (@Newsweek) April 15, 2017

The Animal Adventure Park used Facebook Live to show April the giraffe giving birth where over a million people tuned in.

Just a few hours after April the giraffe paced back and forth with her calf’s hooves and snout hanging from her back end, while inside a pen at the zoo in Harpursville, New York, she was able to successfully give birth to her male calf, who is expected to weigh 150 pounds and stand six feet tall.

“It was an absolutely perfect birthing process, it went exactly as planned,” said Patch, adding that the birth of April’s calf “was unnerving to even those of us who have witnessed animal births previously.”

“Giraffes give birth standing up, which means when the calf is ready to be born, it exits its mother hooves first from six feet off the floor, making for a very exciting event.”

Just 45 minutes after the calf was born, he was able to take his first step with his mother by his side, licking him as he analyzed his surroundings.

The calf’s father, Oliver — a 5-year-old giraffe — was looking on from an adjacent pen.

April the giraffe made headlines after staff at the Animal Adventure Park began live streaming April’s pregnancy via YouTube in February, but the videos were taken down after being flagged for “nudity and sexual content.”

Zoo officials went live on Facebook, where hundreds of people watched, saying, “Unfortunately, with that viral spread that we’ve gained — that popularity — this is a perfect example of why we cannot have nice things.”

“For the millions of you that have been tuning in to take witness of this educational experience of a live giraffe birth, there’s a handful of extremists and animal rights activist that may not agree with us… that have unfortunately reported our YouTube cam as sexually explicit or nude content.”

The live giraffe cam YouTube video of April garnered over 20 million views.

“What [removing the live stream] has done is pulled an educational tool away from tens of millions of individuals,” zoo officials said on Facebook Live. “By bringing awareness, we can bring appreciation and eventually conservation to giraffes in the wild.”

If you are driving this weekend, these are the only longnecks you should enjoy! Congratulations #AprilTheGiraffe pic.twitter.com/ZrMLXg9SLn

— Gilbert Police Dept. (@GilbertPolice) April 15, 2017

YouTube later confirmed that they restored April the giraffe’s videos and her fan based continued to grow, reaching millions of people worldwide.

April the giraffe’s GoFundMe page was created after gaining millions of fans. The zoo made a set goal of $50,000 but after April and Oliver welcomed their new calf, they’ve amassed over $130,000 in donations.

The money will be used to care for the animals.

Updated photos and videos of April the giraffe and her new calf are being shared on Animal Adventure Park’s Facebook page.

In a recent Facebook post, the zoo shared a photo of April and her calf with a caption that stated, “All is well.”

Now that April the giraffe has given birth, the Animal Adventure Park is holding a social media contest to help name the calf.

Why The Easter Bunny Should Remain A Story, Not An Impulse Pet

Bunnies become the most popular pets every time Easter comes. But animal activists are urging people to abandon the idea of getting an Easter bunny for the holiday, and stick to a stuffed or chocolate rabbit instead.

#HAPPYEASTER! We found our resident Easter bunny Clare abandoned in our neighborhood: https://t.co/eeQ5xeoeTT pic.twitter.com/5D7cwLbqXH

— Dallas Zoo (@DallasZoo) March 27, 2016

As Easter is just around the corner, the demand for rabbit sale has skyrocketed in recent days. While you may think it’s a great idea to buy an Easter bunny for your family members as a gift for the holiday, animal activists think you’re committing a terrible mistake.

Caroline Charland, chief of a rescue group called The Bunny Bunch, says Easter is “a terrible time of year” for every rabbit out there for sale.

While some cities in the U.S., including New York and Los Angeles, have already banned the sale of Easter bunnies in pet stores, rabbits still remain an impulsive pet choice every time Easter comes.

Speaking to the New York Daily News, Charland insists that rabbit sales around Easter is “still a massive issue.”

Animal activists say about 80 per cent of rabbits bought as pets around Easter face one of two terrible fates. No matter how sweet a family is to an Easter bunny, death is one of the two grim fates for an Easter rabbit.

Just a reminder, it’s a commitment to adopt an animal. Please consider carefully before bringing home a rabbit or chick for Easter. pic.twitter.com/wqMroJ0CHS

— OhioPetSanctuary.com (@OhPetSanctuary) April 12, 2017

The other fate is being thrown away when the kids are done playing with the Easter bunny. In fact, many Americans bypass pet shops to get an Easter bunny for Easter, as there are a number of websites offering to sell a rabbit.

Buying an Easter bunny straight from breeders at rabbit mills is another popular way of getting bunny for Easter in the cities where the sale of rabbits in pet shops is banned.

But these alternative means of getting an Easter bunny are no less cruel. Even if you’re planning to treat the rabbit you bought for Easter like it’s your own child, animal activists warn that those living furballs are taken away from their mothers too early, which is why many of them don’t survive.

But bunny mills that breed rabbits cash in big time for Easter. Speaking to the New York Daily News, Sandra DeFeo, executive director of the Humane Society of New York, calls every rabbit “a sensitive species that requires a real commitment.”

DeFeo argues that when people think every Easter bunny is “cute,” “cuddly,” and “wonderful,” they fail to realize that those bunnies grow “very quickly.”

Even if a rabbit is not thrown away from the house when it grows up, it still requires tender and careful treatment from its owners throughout its life. And a healthy Easter bunny normally lives from eight to 12 years.

“They’re not an impulse buy.”

Why Buying Your Child a Rabbit for Easter Is a Bad Idea https://t.co/enndmUhVGj pic.twitter.com/jPnawdtl0D

— Home Alone (@HomeAlone4Pet) April 10, 2017

While wowing the little ones with a living Easter bunny seems like a good idea, there’s a high risk that the rabbit won’t survive until next Easter. That’s because once the Easter bunny grows bigger, children tend to neglect it.

And that’s just wrong, as bunnies “deserve the same consideration, level of care, and opportunity for longevity” as every pet cat and dog has, as noted by a New York-based group All About Rabbits Rescue.

Interestingly, a rabbit is the third most popular pet in the U.S. after cats and dogs, according to the Humane Society of the United States. But at the same time, every Easter bunny risks being abandoned after Easter, as rabbits are the third most abandoned pets in America.

In fact, a cartoon bunny named Snowball, who was voiced by actor Kevin Hart in 2016’s The Secret wildlife of Pets, gets abandoned – and this is based on fact.

That’s why it’s a good idea to stick to chocolate or stuffed bunnies for Easter instead of the living furballs.

April The Giraffe Finally Gives Birth, And It’s A Boy!

The moment we have all be waiting on for so many months has come. April the Giraffe has had her brand new baby calf and it is a boy. Everyone has been waiting a long time for this. April the Giraffe was supposed to only be pregnant for 15 months, but she went one month over and finally gave birth live for 1.2 million people to watch. Fans is very happy about this.

This live birth ended the nail-biting and pacing of millions of people in a virtual waiting room. Those who subscribed to the text messages found out about the birth first. People who subscribed to the text messaging and received the first birth announcement had to pay $4.95 for this. However, everyone found out this morning that April the Giraffe had finally given birth on the live feed for all to see. A brand new baby boy calf was born. He weighs 150 pounds and is six-feet tall.

According to CNBC on April 15, April the Giraffe is 15-years-old and this is her fourth calf. The father giraffe, Oliver, is 5-years-old, and this is his first baby. April started going into labor early this morning and she gave birth to the new baby before 10 a.m. EST. She resides at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, which is 130 miles northwest of New York City.

After the birth, April licked the newborn calf while he slowly picked his head up off the floor of the enclosed pen. The newborn calf stood up on his wobbly legs for the first time while mama helped keep her new calf steady. As the newborn was finally out, the logo at the bottom of the live feed quickly changed from “Toys R Us” to “Babies R Us” to announce the birth of the brand new calf.

The live stream on YouTube was sponsored by Toys R Us, and has been going since February when it was predicted that April the Giraffe would have her new calf. However, she was two months late while everyone who tuned in every day was biting their nails and pacing constantly while trying to be patient. Although everyone was starting to get impatient, they are undoubtedly happy that the birth was announced this morning.

NPR reports that the zoo plans on holding a naming contest to name the brand new calf. Currently, April the Giraffe has her own website, which you can view here, and her GoFundMe page where they have raised over $100,000 already. The goal was for $50,000 and they surpassed that raising $134,350. The GoFundMe page funds are for the care of April, her calf, and the keepers for them. On her website, you can purchase clothes for babies and adults to also help support April the Giraffe and her calf. This is because April has her own apparel line with pictures of her and logos with her name on them.

According to E! Online, the naming competition has an entry fee. Those who do want a say in the naming process will only have to donate $1 toward their new GoFundMe page they will be setting up for the naming competition. Then, once they get the six names they like, it will be up to social media fans to vote on one of these names. What do you think the calf’s name should be? Sound off with your thoughts on all of this and let us know what you think!

April The Giraffe Baby Name: Early Favorites Emerge For Animal Adventure Park’s New Contest [Updated]

Got any ideas for April the giraffe and her baby’s name? Animal Adventure Park has just launched a contest that allows giraffe cam viewers to help in the naming process, as they choose their own names and effectively vote for them. And while the Harpursville, N.Y. park is keeping things under wraps and not sharing any partial results, there are some names that may have a better chance than others of winning the baby name contest.

According to Animal Adventure Park’s website for the April the giraffe baby naming contest, the voting process will last about 10 days, with users free to choose their own names, right down to the exact spelling of the name. After about five days, which marks the end of the first stage, AAP will announce a list of 10 finalists, which voters will have to choose from in the baby name contest’s second stage. That means we should know the name of April the giraffe’s fourth calf before the end of the month.

Each vote costs $1 and will be charged to a user’s PayPal account, with a minimum of five votes and no maximum amount of names or votes. Funds raised from the April the giraffe baby name contest will go toward giraffe conservation efforts, Animal Adventure Park’s operations, and Ava’s Little Heroes, a charity event for families of children going through “unexpected medical journeys.” The event was named after the daughter of AAP owner Jordan Patch, who was born in January 2016 with an arachnoid cyst that may potentially affect the quality of her __life as she grows older.

Now that you know the mechanics of Animal Adventure Park’s baby name contest, it’s time to look at some of the names that Facebook users have suggested since the contest was launched on Saturday.

The name Wyatt has been dropped from time to time, even as April prepared to give birth, and the reason it’s stood out as a top April the giraffe baby name candidate is simple – it’s a play on the words “why it,” or “why (does) it take so long,” as an Animal Adventure Park Facebook commenter had suggested. And it also happens to be a fairly popular name for baby boys. According to Baby Center’s rankings for the year 2016, Wyatt was the 36th most popular male name.

Baby Center’s data suggests that Apollo, despite its status as a fast-rising masculine name, is still far removed from Wyatt and other common baby names, with a ranking of 578th among male names for the year 2016. But it’s shaping up as another favorite in the April the giraffe baby name contest. The name was suggested yesterday by a Facebook commenter, who explained that Apollo is a combination of the names April, Oliver, and the words “little one.” And so far, her comment has gotten more than 33,000 likes, making it, by far, the top favorite based on Facebook reactions alone.

Late last night, another woman had suggested Apollo as a name for April the giraffe’s new calf, using the very same explanation – AP for April, OL for Oliver, LO for little one.

Apollo and Wyatt may have gotten thousands of likes from Facebook users, but there are some other well-liked names that may or may not be in the mix once the top 10 names in the contest’s first stage are revealed later on this week.

— ????DENKYUU MEDIA???? (@DenkyuuMedia) April 16, 2017

One user brought up the history of negative events that took place on the date April’s fourth calf was born – the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, and the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. As the calf’s birth also took place on April 15, the user suggested Phoenix, as she believes the event represents a “rise from the ashes of negativity.”

Other users have taken the simpler approach and gotten many likes for their suggestions – some of the simpler April the giraffe baby name candidates have included Harpur (or short for Harpursville), and Patch or Patches, in honor of Jordan Patch himself.

As of 1:40 p.m. ET, Harpur and Patches appear to be gaining lots of momentum among Animal Adventure Park Facebook followers, and now have close to 6,000 and 4,000 likes respectively. Additionally, the name Jasce (pronounced “Jace”) has more than 5,200 likes as a clever acronym incorporating the names of AAP employees — J for Jordan (Patch), A for Allysa (Swilley), S for (Dr. Tim) Slater, C for Corey (Dwyer), and E for Earth, or the thousands of giraffe cam viewers who eagerly awaited the birth of April’s calf.

Of course, there’s the possibility of users taking advantage of the freedom Animal Adventure Park has given them, and choosing some of the most outlandish, silly names possible. A report from Mashable states that several Twitter users have suggested giving April the giraffe’s baby the name “Harambe” after the Cincinnati Zoo gorilla who was shot and killed last year when a child fell into his enclosure. And the Inquisitr wrote on Saturday that there have been instances where giving the public so much freedom to choose names has arguably backfired, such as the time “Boaty McBoatface” was chosen as the name of a British polar research vessel.

Do you have other suggestions for April the giraffe and her baby’s name, or do you want to share the names you entered in the Animal Adventure Park baby name contest? Don’t be shy and sound off in the comments section below!

April The Giraffe Gives Birth At Animal Adventure Park: The Excitement Isn’t Over Yet, What’s Next?

April the giraffe’s most anticipated baby calf was finally born. The celebrity mother giraffe finally welcomed her newborn male calf on April 15 at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, with millions of people tuning into the zoo’s live feed. Now that April’s birth is over, what’s next? One would think that people will finally leave the live camera showing April and her baby, but apparently, the internet is still hooked. This time, they are enjoying watching the mother and her new calf bond.

People are now curious as to when they can see April the giraffe’s yet to be named calf. Animal Adventure Park is not done with the April hype just yet. The park immediately started a contest for the best name for April’s baby. Fans of the mother-son tandem can now visit the website Nameaprilscalf.com to start voting for different names. Each vote costs $1 each with a minimum of five different name choices.

The funds raised from the contest will go to conservation efforts for giraffes found in the wild, help Animal Adventure Park’s owner’s daughter, who suffers from a rare form of epilepsy and continue with the improvement of the zoo’s facility and services. The park will reveal the top 10 name choices at the end of the first phase of the contest.

The next excitement at Animal Adventure Park should be the naming of April the giraffe’s newborn. It is expected that the hype won’t die down just yet and this is not just because people will be helping out with the names, but also because the calf itself is a wonderful sight. People continue to watch the zoo’s live feed, especially the adorable moments when the mother and calf bond together.

Animal Adventure Park’s live camera feed on April the giraffe and her baby will be shut down in five days, but that doesn’t mean people will not get any updates on their favorite animal and the calf’s development. The park’s owner, Jordan Patch, promised that he will keep April’s fans posted through the text alert system, Press Connects reported. Patch will send more information on the duo as well as photos of them so fans won’t miss the giraffes so much.

For now, Animal Adventure Park is temporarily closed but will reopen on May 13. Furthermore, it was reported that there are still visitors who are taking chances just to see the mother giraffe and her newborn. Sadly, the park cannot let anyone in for now. They instead gave visitors stuffed giraffe toys and Lego sets.

Animal Adventure Park staff is letting April and her calf bond naturally. April will wean her baby the natural way and this process could take between six and 12 months. After the baby has weaned off from the mother all by itself, it would be time for them to separate. April’s baby will be moved to a different facility to avoid inbreeding.

Meanwhile, there are also questions about April the giraffe’s mate, Oliver, and how will he be part of this family. According to the zoo, Oliver will not be really involved in all of this because naturally, male giraffes are only interested in mating and fighting other males.

Patch had initially hoped that when April first came to Animal Adventure Park, she and Oliver would have a good relationship that will, later on, result in a birth of a calf. Apparently, Patch’s hope has turned into a reality. Oliver and April’s baby will be formally introduced eventually, but at this point, it’s going to be her and her baby spending some quality time. The park now hopes that someday, when the weaning process is done, there would be another announcement from Oliver and April.

Animal Adventure Park Giraffe Cam: Two Months In, And April The Giraffe Still Unites Live Cam Viewers

You may not be aware of it, but people have been watching Animal Adventure Park’s giraffe cam for a little more than two months, waiting for April the giraffe updates on Facebook and hoping that April finally gives birth. There have been many false alarms, and despite the giraffe cam and AAP Facebook page both being advertised as “conflict-free zones,” there has been some negativity seeping in at times. But people are still patiently waiting, as April heads into Easter Sunday without having given birth to her fourth calf yet. And as some have observed, AAP’s live cam is seemingly a tool of unity in today’s polarizing times.

Since the live giraffe cam’s rather quiet arrival in the second week of February, people have been faithfully tuning in, wishing April the giraffe the best, and oftentimes thanking Harpursville, New York-based Animal Adventure Park for the giraffe cam and the unusual diversion it has provided. Live cam viewers and Facebook visitors also have pleasant online exchanges with each other, instead of the intense virtual debates that are commonplace on social media these days. But as a recent report stated, the long wait for April to give birth has turned the “conflict-free zones” of the giraffe cam and Facebook page into an occasional battlefield.

The Washington Post reported earlier this week that there have been several Facebook users accusing Animal Adventure Park of turning the April the Giraffe craze into a money-making endeavor. Yet there have been many more who have staunchly defended the park from its detractors, including one woman who expressed her disappointment that a once-peaceful and uniting place has had some negativity seeping in.

“It is sad to see that what has brought so many people together is now becoming a forum to complain.”

So who wants to chip in & get April the giraffe a c-section?!? My patience is wearing thin! Lol ???? #NoHotchNoWatch pic.twitter.com/8jk7vm4SLI

— Jacquelyn Stockwell (@pinkluv212) April 6, 2017

But even with “naysayers” accusing Animal Adventure Park of using giraffe cam viewers to monetize its operations or claiming April’s pregnancy is “fake news,” many believe that April’s broader purpose is to unite a nation that could often be divided on certain issues. The Inquisitr wrote an op-ed on the topic two weeks ago, and in the latest pro-April opinion piece of this kind, Newsweek said on Thursday that the story of April is still a feel-good story when most other news reports tend to sow intrigue and divisiveness among people.

“The giraffe’s ability to be content and resilient in the face of a 24-hour news frenzy – even if she has no idea any of this is happening – should be a lesson to all who have seen even a brief moment of her pregnancy. In a time of great uncertainty and change, April is providing hope, light and a beautiful distraction from an increasingly complicated world.”

April the giraffe's pregnancy is giving hope to millions https://t.co/rpVfXgHAkl pic.twitter.com/6hD1nMXA1s

— Newsweek (@Newsweek) April 14, 2017

The Newsweek report also cited a Sacramento giraffe expert who, like other specialists have done in recent weeks, stressed that predicting when a giraffe like April would give birth is not an exact science.

As AAP’s April the giraffe updates wax and wane in terms of providing big developments, some other publications are looking for less orthodox signs that April may soon be giving birth, finally yielding some payoff for the hundreds of thousands who have watched the Animal Adventure Park giraffe cam since it debuted in February.

With Easter Sunday having definite religious and spiritual significance for a lot of us, Patch brought up an interesting point from an earlier April the Giraffe update last month – Animal Adventure Park’s live giraffe cam picked up an “omen” of April’s imminent labor, with an imprint in her bedding resembling the shape of a baby giraffe’s face and neck. While that took place on March 5, there’s an outside chance it might be a sign of something due to happen in the coming days, or even hours.

As for today’s actual April the giraffe update, Animal Adventure Park reported more of the same – light discharge and a moderate appetite – and confirmed that active labor will be the next big change to report on.

Do you believe the Animal Adventure Park giraffe cam and its general “conflict-free” nature is indeed uniting America, or maybe even the world, in a time when people tend to disagree on a lot of things? And are you still waiting for April the giraffe to give birth, despite the long wait? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

April The Giraffe Baby Name: What Will Officials Name The New Baby Giraffe? Announcement Could Be Major Event

April the Giraffe is finally having her baby after weeks of waiting and watching, and now there’s another big question — what will the baby’s name be?

The Animal Adventure Park giraffe has been in the spotlight since late February when a live video feed started to keep track of when she would give birth. It ended up taking more than a month and a half, but on Saturday morning, April the Giraffe finally went into active labor to have her baby. The live video attracted close to 800,000 viewers on Saturday morning, as the baby began to peek through.

April’s baby is expected to be about 6 feet tall and weigh about 150 pounds. As USA Today noted, April’s baby makes three giraffes for the park, but only for a limited time.

“The calf will be the third giraffe to call Animal Adventure’s giraffe barn home. April is a 15-year-old reticulated giraffe who came to the park in September 2015. Five-year-old Oliver is the calf’s father, and was the park’s first giraffe when he arrived four months before April in May 2015.”

“The calf likely won’t stay long at Animal Adventure with its mom and dad. After April has raised her baby naturally and it has weaned itself after six to 12 months, it will move on to another facility for safety purposes.”

The speculation immediately turned to what officials should name April the Giraffe’s baby, even before the baby made its official debut. There were already plenty of leading candidates suggested by fans. Many offered April Jr., a nod to the month when April’s baby was finally born. Others suggested Delayney (“Delay”ney) for how long viewers had to wait to finally see the giraffe arrive.

So what will April the Giraffe’s baby be named? That will be up to the fans who have been following her along, Animal Adventure Park officials said.

“We do have a naming contest in the works,” spokesman Jordan Patch told Hollywood Life in the early days of April’s viral livefeed craze.

And there could be a big event planned for the reveal of April the Giraffe’s baby name.

“A current, possible exclusive deal with a day time talk show,” Patch said.

“We are shocked on just how viral this has gone.”

There could be a drawback to the plan to let fans help select April the Giraffe’s baby name. Online naming contests in recent years have turned into something of a farce, with fans trying to push the most ridiculous names possible.

The most famous example was when the British Natural Environment Research Council let the internet name its $287 million polar research vessel. The overwhelming winner was Boaty McBoatface, though officials ended up scrapping that name and going with RRS Sir David Attenborough instead. As something of a consolation, the ship’s underwater research vessel was named Boaty McBoatface.

As the Washington Post noted, an online contest to name a new gorilla born at the Philadelphia Zoo last year ended up as a tribute to the internet’s favorite martyred gorilla, Harambe.

The leading suggestions for that contest included: Harambe, Harambe McKongface, Harambinho, Harambab, Harambe, Jr., Harambe, Second of His Name, Harambe 2: Electric Bugaloo, and Harambe’s Revenge.

Many fans already believe April the Giraffe’s baby name will follow the same trend.

I vote they name the baby giraffe Harambe. #AprilTheGiraffe #AprilGivesBirth

— Jordan Bondurant (@JBondurantVALW) April 15, 2017

they should name the baby giraffe after jackie robinson because april 15, but we all know people will vote for "giraffey mcgiraffeface"

— Brady Tucker (@brady_tucker) April 15, 2017

But some more recent online naming contests have gotten wise to the trend of picking the silliest choices possible and countered it by giving people a pre-set list of names they can choose. That will likely be the case when it comes time to name April the Giraffe’s baby.

Animal Adventure Park has not said exactly when April the Giraffe’s baby will get a new name, but it sounds like it will be quite an event when it finally happens.

Aprilholics Battle For Baby Names, Animal Adventure Park Share New Insights: Easter Calf On Its Way?

Easter bunny or Easter giraffe calf? That’s the question many have been pondering for days.

April, the pregnant giraffe at Animal Adventure Park, has a huge fan following — both online and offline. Considering the amount of time they spend on the live cam each day, it’d only be fair to call them “Aprilholics.”

For weeks, these Aprilholics have been watching, waiting, and often wondering when April would deliver a calf.

As luck would have it, Animal Adventure Park made a promising remark on Friday.

“April is already out and enjoying the sunshine for the day. Grain intake remains moderate. Light discharge continues. Otherwise, all is normal and well — as expected. The only real drastic changes we will see from here is active labor. No much more change or development can occur,” announced the park authorities.

After watching the live feed of #aprilthegiraffe she has named her giraffe April. She has had this for about 2 years and it just sat on her bed. Now, it's her new BFF (#bestfluffyfriend)! Thank you @animaladventurepark for helping her love giraffes!!

On Facebook groups, the battle of the baby names has already begun. As of now, Patches seems to be the popular choice for the baby giraffe, as it pays tribute to Jordan Patch, the owner of Animal Adventure Park.

Ouida Jones Campbell from North Carolina is hoping that the calf will be here by Easter.

“If it’s a boy I vote for Patches in honor of Jordan and if it’s a girl I’d like Hope because she is giving us all hope that giraffes will survive for many more generations.”

Jessica Battaglia from Ohio says, “I am hoping for an Easter baby. I think it will be a boy, but have names picked for both. If it’s a boy, it will be called Patches. If it’s a girl, she will be Ava.”

Carrie Hillman Douthit from Maryland believes April will have a girl.

“I think May would be a great name for her because ‘April showers bring May flowers,'” she said.

Annie Manthey from Minnesota says it would make for an incredible end to April’s story if she had her calf on Easter Sunday.

“I am hoping for a girl. I would pick the name Patches after the park owners family. After the calf is born, I will continue to follow Animal Adventure Park so I can stay informed on April, Oliver, and the baby.”

Claudia Parrington says, “I think she is having a boy because of how low she is carrying and my name suggestion would be Ranger, which mean forest guardian. Once the baby comes, I am going to visit AAP and still follow April, Oliver and Ranger.”

Kim Branski Bucka from Virginia echoes the sentiments of many who have been hooked on to the live cam for months.

“I have no idea when he/she will arrive, but I am gonna call them About Damn Time.”

Debi Cusato-Robinson believes April many not have her calf on Easter.

“I don’t think April will have her baby just yet. I believe we have a few more weeks to go. There were many times I felt, ‘This is it!’ only to be teased by Miss April once again,” she said.

Carla Pelham and Ashlie Buchanan, who head the most active Facebook groups dedicated to April, have promised that their groups are here to stay even after the calf is born.

“After the calf is born, the group continues to be. We owe that to all our members who have invested their time on the group. We are already looking into other live births we can follow,” said Pelham, who heads April Giraffe Friends.

Buchanan, who runs the Facebook group “April The Giraffe,” says managing the group has been a life-changing experience.

“After April gives birth, I would like to keep the group and continue to get to know the members. We are hoping to plan a visit to the park as a group so I am really looking forward to that as well,” she said.

Meanwhile, the hunt for the calf names continues on social media. Popular baby names include Unity, Maverick, May Flower, Rafiki, Unity, Olivia, Agapi, Jack, Apollo, Jordan, Peaches, Shelby, Lily, Chester, haweeyo, Annie, Savannah. Grace, Gigi, Kanye, Thumper, Pokie, Cooper, Suzie Surprise, Zanga, Noah, Sunshine, Liberty, Jessie, Blossom, Max, Marcus, Patience, Attwell, Alphie, Alfalfa, and Arnie.

Man Does Cat Bath Rap In Bathtub Bathing His Cat, Ravioli [Video]

There seems to be nothing like a great animal video to calm the mind and the spirit, and a Baltimore rapper called @iAmMoshow, along with his orange tabby, Ravioli are funny, and oddly sweet. Rapper@ iAmMoshow actually gets in the tub with Ravioli and raps sweetly to keep Ravioli calm while getting a bath. While it’s not certain if @iAmMoshow is brave, or a masochist, he seems committed to Ravioli’s hygiene ritual.

“You alright, uh, uh, gotta give my cat a bath, gotta give my cat a bath. Like rub-a-dub dub gotta give my cat a scrub…I’m sorry I’ve gotta keep you clean. Ravioli please don’t treat me mean. Cat people put your hands up, where you at baby?”

It’s truly hard not to like @iamMoshow, as he keeps his cool, even while Ravioli starts to climb his owner, grabbing onto his ball cap. The rapper signs off by telling fans that while Ravioli isn’t happy, at least he’s clean.

“Bye we love you. He’s not happy right now. Happy Catterday!”

While traditional rap is not generally about pet care, @iamMoshow now has a huge following and has views near 1 million just for his cat bath rap. Fans gush over the rapper, and of course, Ravioli. And if you are wondering, Ravioli isn’t an “only child,” as @iamMoshow also has some Sphynx cats that seem to enjoy dress-up. @iamMoshow wraps his cats in silk bandanas and has other videos he posts on social media, and especially on Instagram @iamMoshow.

While @iamMoshow originally hails from Portland, Oregon, he is now living in Baltimore, where he is a huge supporter of animal adoptions. @iamMoshow, whose real name is Dwayne Molock, says that he really does bathe his cats, and that day, he bathed all four of his cats, including Ravioli.

In addition to rapping about bathing his cats, he also raps about adopting a kitty that needs a home.

“Won’t you adopt a kitty this holiday season? Do it for Moshow!”

He explains that while not all cats need a bath from a human routinely, certain breeds need assistance from their human friends in order to have a healthy coat.

None of the kitty cats seem any worse for wear, as @iamMoshow has lots of pictures on Twitter and Instagram of him cuddled with his whole cat crew.

What do you think of the Cat Bath Rap? Are you brave enough to bathe with your cat?

Taiwan Becomes The First Asian State To Ban Cat And Dog Meat

Taiwan has become the first Asian state to ban the sale and consumption of cat and dog meat. On Tuesday, government officials voted to add the amendment to the existing Animal Protection Act. In addition to prohibiting residents from selling or using cats and dogs for food, the amendment bans residents from attaching leashed animals to motorized vehicles.

In many countries, cats and dogs are considered pets and some people find the idea of selling or consuming their meat terribly disturbing. However, the sale or consumption of cat and dog meat is legal in numerous countries throughout the world — including in the United States.

Taiwan has banned the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat https://t.co/0XF32Kmhe0 via @PEOPLEPets pic.twitter.com/s1NkzAjpYm

— People Magazine (@people) April 12, 2017

As there are no federal laws prohibiting the consumption of cat and dog meat in the United States, each state has the freedom to make their own laws. The sale and consumption of cat and dog meat are currently prohibited in a handful of states, including California, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Virginia. As reported by Inhabitat.com, those states have identified cats and dogs as domesticated animals — which are “commonly kept as a pet or companion.”

Although a majority of states do not specifically ban the consumption of domesticated animals, the commercial sale of cat and dog meat is prohibited nationwide. Animal cruelty laws also prevent U. S. residents from causing undue harm to domesticated animals and livestock.

H.R. 1406, which was introduced in the House in March 2017, would add an amendment to the existing Animal Welfare Act prohibiting the slaughter of cats and dogs for human consumption nationwide.

— Humane Society Int’l (@HSIGlobal) April 12, 2017

As stated in the text of the bill, the so-called Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act of 2017 would ban the possession, sale, and transport of cats and dogs for human consumption. Violators would face up to one year in prison and a fine up to $2,500.

Although the sale or consumption of cat and dog meat is permitted in several countries, including Switzerland and Mexico, Asian countries and states have received a majority of the publicity and criticism surrounding the practice.

China’s annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival, in particular, has drawn international attention and has become one of the most controversial celebrations in the world. During the 10-day festival, an estimated 15,000 cats and dogs are slaughtered and consumed each year.

As reported by Independent, the animals are often stored and killed in deplorable conditions. In many cases, the cats and dogs are “transported more than 1,000 miles to the location of the festival in cramped conditions.” According to some witnesses, the animals “are either skinned alive or bludgeoned to death in public before being turned into meat and sold on the street.”

Although China’s Yulin Dog Meat Festival will likely continue, lawmakers in Taiwan have banned the sale of dog and cat meat. As reported by CNN, violators of the new law could face up to two years in prison and a $8,200 fine. In addition to the fine, they could face public criticism — as their names and photographs could be published by media outlets.

In many countries, cat and dog meat are consumed our of necessity. However, in Asia, it is part of a long-standing tradition. In an interview with Consumer Affairs, Born Free USA employee Roselyn Morrison said she “spent many hours investigating the sale of dogs in South Korea for human consumption.” Morrison acknowledges that dog meat is simply part of Korean tradition. However, she is specifically concerned with the inhumane treatment of the animals.

“According to the tradition, if you scare the dog before it dies it makes the meat more tender… Dogs are either hung, electrocuted, or beaten to death while cats are boiled alive.”

Although people are particularly appalled with the slaughter and consumption of domesticated animals, others argue that killing any animal for food is inhumane. At this time, Taiwan will continue to use fish and livestock as a source of food. However, the state will no longer allow cat and dog meat to be sold or consumed.

April The Giraffe Gives Birth: Thank You, Animal Adventure Park, For Uniting Live Cam Viewers [Opinion]

It almost feels weird to be writing this, but as you may know by now, April the giraffe has given birth. And I was “there” — watching Animal Adventure Park’s live cam and Facebook stream, dropping everything I was doing to make sure I had a chance to watch everything go down. When April’s water broke and her newborn calf literally popped out Saturday morning at approximately 9:53 a.m. ET, I had just three words to say, even as I sat in front of my laptop with no one else around to hear me shout out in glee.

“Oh yeah, April!”

One day later, it still makes me smile when I think about it. The level of excitement and emotion in my voice at that time, I’d say, was similar to what you’d hear from me if my favorite sports team won a championship game. Or perhaps, if one of my favorite wrestlers finally joined the WWE, or returned to the company after a long absence. And as far as this Animal Adventure Park live cam viewer goes, the only thing that could top watching April the giraffe give birth would be the eventual thrill of becoming a first-time parent.

Now this is #beautiful #sweet #loving ???? #AprilTheGiraffe #aprilandherbaby????#easterblessings pic.twitter.com/JcdjW8PJEV

— Catt McCreary (@CattMcCreary) April 15, 2017

But that’s the thing about the giraffe cam — it allowed millions of people around the world to watch, in real-time, what a mother giraffe goes through as she expects a child. For more than two months, we watched and waited as April manifested physical changes that we may have thought were significant, but were, at the end of the day, more subtle all along. With human mothers, we have a good idea of what’s going to happen within the course of an average nine-month pregnancy, but that’s not the case with mother giraffes — very few of us knew that April and other giraffes are usually pregnant for about 15 months, but thanks to Animal Adventure Park, its live cam, and its always-informative team, we now know that, on top of many other giraffe-related factoids.

Throughout this long, strange, yet ultimately fulfilling trip (pardon the Grateful Dead reference) that has been April the giraffe’s pregnancy, there’s one more take-home thought I’m bringing with me now that April has given birth. Ever notice how people from all walks of __life would put aside their differences and personal opinions to wish April the best, share giraffe-related facts or trivia, or comment about how wonderful it could be to watch a giraffe as she prepares to give birth? Instantly, that reminded me of how the opposite is true whenever I venture over to other public internet forums or comment sections.

It’s something I see whenever I check Reddit discussions about pro wrestling or visit the Facebook page of my favorite basketball teams. I see it even more pronounced when supporters of my country’s president launch into personal, even sexually-offensive attacks, at people who oppose his presidency. And then you’ve got the never-ending arguments over religious-related topics. Heck, there was even a time when two online acquaintances of mine from a musician’s forum — two cousins, no less — became estranged when a simple discussion about space discoveries turned into a heated science vs. religion debate.

We never got that when we were talking about and showing support for April the giraffe, or watching the Animal Adventure Park live cam.

— Connie Sandlin (@Yr_Obt_Svt) April 15, 2017

Of course, it wasn’t a perfectly conflict-free zone as we waited for April the giraffe to give birth. Sure, I’d see a troll or two sneak in, and as the Washington Post reported this week, there had been people accusing AAP of using April’s viral popularity as a means to monetize its operations. But just as quickly as these trolls and fault-finders would appear, they would essentially disappear, countered by a plethora of positive, uplifting posts from people who truly care about April the giraffe.

That, to me, is unity — a sense of unity you don’t get when Donald Trump supporters and detractors argue with each other, or to use a sporting example, when Golden State Warriors fans trash-talk Cleveland Cavaliers fans or vice versa. It’s so common and so petty for people to dislike someone over the people or entities they support, but when we were watching the live cam, nobody cared about politics and other potentially divisive topics.

Once again, it’s an odd feeling for me to take stock of the fact that April the giraffe has given birth. But now that she has, it is my hope that we look back at Animal Adventure Park’s live giraffe cam and remember that for a little over two months, we could take part in an online experience that’s generally free of mudslinging, negativity, and hatred over conflicting views. If only we could act that way everyday while we’re on the internet.

There are approximately 100,000 wild giraffes roaming Africa, but some of the subspecies are almost entirely extinct. April the giraffe’s calf is of greater importance than simply a showpiece. Education programs along with conservation and breeding efforts, like those of the Animal Adventure Park, are essential to keeping reticulated giraffes from disappearing completely.

With over 15 million views, the Animal Adventure Park’s live giraffe cam has proven to be of importance around the globe. The park staff has done a tremendous job of educating thousands of households at a time.

Because of their sheer size, giraffes have very few natural predators in the animal world. Humans, however, have proven to be a very real threat. Giraffes are poached for their thick hair and skin.

The staff at the Animal Adventure Park has been very informative of April the giraffe’s pregnancy, as well as facts regarding April’s species. Police Officers Shoot Army Veteran’s Service Dog

Police officers in Augusta, Kansas shot and killed an army veteran’s service dog during a house-call. Police say the dog was killed in self-defense, but army veteran Alan Fitzgerald says that he lost more than a pet.

“He was my one and only child, because I never had any kids.”

Fitzgerald said Midnite the German Shepherd helped him cope with PTSD. [Image by Gary Gershoff/Getty Images for AKC]

Alan Fitzgerald, like many veterans, suffers from PTSD and kept Midnite, a black German Shepherd, around to help him cope with his trauma and anxiety. He says that Midnite was certified in December and showed KSNW a copy of Midnite’s identification card and service animal vest.

“Whenever I was having some sort of episode of oncoming anxiety, he knew what to do. He’d come up and nudge me or do something silly. He’d turn over on his back and give that little smile, you know, that dogs give. I’m just going to miss all of that.”

Midnite was shot when officers approached Fitzgerald’s house due to a complaint from a neighbor about the dog. Midnite had been playing a few houses down with a neighbor’s smaller dog, hovering over the smaller dog and chasing it. Fitzgerald spoke with the owner of the smaller dog, who wasn’t hurt at all in the playing. Still, the owner complained about Midnite being loose.

Not long after, Midnite would pay the ultimate price.

Police and animal control officers approached Fitzgerald’s mobile home and knocked on the door. They pounded on the screen door, sending Midnite into a barking frenzy.

“All of a sudden, I heard this pound pound pound on the screen door. And I heard Midnite barking, obviously hes going to bark because he’s guarding the house.”

What follows after Midnite’s barking are two conflicting accounts of the same incident.

According to police, the front door was open but the glass screen door was shut. The dog rushed and hit the glass screen door, startling the officer. When the dog charged again, the door opened and Midnite rushed at the officer.

“In his attempt to get away from the dog, he was backing up and backed off the porch and hit his head. The dog charged him, trying to bite him, and the officer that was there at the scene fired his weapon and killed the dog.”

But neighbors tell a different story. Eyewitness accounts say that it was actually the officer who opened the door, and trespassing onto Fitzgerald’s property sent Midnite into a frenzy. When the officer saw the dog he backed up, but since he had opened the door it was too late–Midnite was out of the house.

“He opened the door and took a step into the house, and immediately came back out because Midnite had you know, met him at the door. The next thing I know, he’s sitting there kicking midnight and has his baton and is hitting Midnite.”

Once Midnite was outside and in attack mode, officers shot him. Fitzgerald described how all he heard from inside his home was barking, gunshots, and the sound of his beloved pet screaming in agony.

“All of a sudden then I heard shots fired and I heard my dog screaming in agony.”

In a video for KSNW, Fitzgerald is visibly distraught over losing his friend. He says the Midnite crawled back to the front door before drawing his last breath.

The officer who shot Midnite feels “terrible” and has lost sleep over the incident. Yet the police chief places the blame on Fitzgerald.

“Frankly, I put this on the owner of that dog. As far as I’m concerned, this is irresponsible dog ownership.”

Alan Fitzgerald is considering taking legal action in Midnite’s memory.

UPS Driver Runs Over Family’s Dog, Leaves Note To Apologize As Mother Is Outraged

There have been many claims made against UPS over the years and they have ranged from throwing packages, driving through lawns, and breaking things, but this may be the worst one yet. A woman from Washington is irate after a UPS driver reportedly ran over the family’s dog and didn’t bother to let them know. Instead of actually advising them in person that he killed the dog, he simply left a “Missed Package” note saying what happened.

According to the Daily Mail, Cynthia Wakelin says that she was not home at the time of the horrible incident which took the __life of her very first dog. Upon returning home, she found a “Missed Package” slip on her front door from UPS, but there was much more to it than a delivery at a package attempt.

On the note was a handwritten message which included an apology from the UPS driver, but it was for something far worse than not being able to catch her home to deliver her package. The note said the driver was “sorry,” but he backed over “Tobey” and that “he’s dead.”

PLEASE SHARE! THIS IS TO TRY AND CHANGE @UPS POLICY! WHEN AN A PET IS INJURED OR KILLED THERE SHOULD BE A CALL! IT SHOULD NOT BE IN A SAME CATEGORY AS A PACKAGE. LEAVING A NOTE IS NOT OK! A @ups driver killed my 14 y/o dog, Toby, and left this note on my door! He also put his body where I had to search for him. My phone number was on the package and on my babies collar. You took my baby! You couldn't even call and tell me or give a sincere apology? You thought you could redeliver my package the next day and apologize (according to your supervisor because I reported it and you did not )? We weren't worth your time that day? I had to come home WITH MY KIDS and find a note! Do you know how traumatizing that is for a 6 year old boy?! I'm sick. My whole family is sick. This is not acceptable! I live far off the main roads. You failed to pay attention and have no heart! You ripped my family into pieces all because of a policy @ups needs to change ! I didn't get to say goodbye to the first dog I have ever owned. He was my family. He was my child's best friend. We deserved a call. #iwantmydogback #mansbestfriend #Dogsmatter #dogs #dogstrust #changeupspolicy #wspca #inhumane #ups @oprahmagazine @oprah #oprah #foxnews @foxnews #nbc @nbc @instagram #instagram

As stated in her Instagram post, Wakelin is looking to change the UPS policy that if a pet is accidentally killed by a driver, the family should be told in person or at least by a phone call.

By the way that Wakelin tells the tale, her 14-year-old dog named Toby was roaming free as she allows all of her dogs to do, according to Fox 8. She said they are allowed to go down by the lake near the house, but most of the time, they just “sit on the porch.”

Upon returning home from being out, she found the note and had to find a way to explain Toby’s death to her children. Wakelin states that the driver did not report the incident to their supervisor and just tried to deliver the package the next day and apologize.

Wakelin did report the situation to the UPS supervisor at the local office.

Along with her anger and sheer frustration with the UPS driver, Wakelin made sure to do what she could to pay tribute to Toby. She took to Instagram to post a picture of the family’s beloved dog and write a heartfelt goodbye since she was never able to do that when he died.

#RIP my sweet Toby James. You gave us so many years of love and protection. You were the coolest dog ever! You loved me through all my tears and strife. You completed my little family when it was just me @devon_wakelin and @shaimarie11 Your love for Landon and Asher was magnificent! You taught Ali how to be a good dog. You showed her how to protect your family and always come home. I love you so much it hurts baby boy. My heart is broken for you. I miss scratching behind your tiny ears. I miss your stoic face. I miss throwing a bone or ball and you looking at me like it's not your job to get it. I love you so much Tobs ???????????????????? #takentoosoon #dogs #dogstrust #iwantmydogback

She is attempting to have her posts on Instagram and her story to go viral, but not for the reason of just gaining social media attention. Wakelin wants everyone to know what UPS’ supposed policy is and how it is wrong that they didn’t even find it necessary to tell the family in person that their dog was now dead.

Wakelin wasn’t looking for the UPS driver to wait around until she returned home, but someone could have called her. Her phone number was on the collar of the dog as well as on the package the UPS driver was delivering to her residence.

Upon reading the note, Wakelin said that the driver saying Toby was dead “over by where I turn around” really wasn’t great info. Per the Daily Mail, she said it took her a while to really hunt for the body of her Shar Pei-terrier mix dog. She finally located his body behind a log in a wooded area which led to her home.

Cynthia Wakelin’s dog Toby James had a tragic ending to his __life after being with his family for 14 long years. The accusation that a UPS driver ran over the dog, killed it, and left a note to advise the family is something that seems overly inexcusable and Wakelin isn’t having it. She is seeking for UPS to change their policy of just leaving a note when a problem arises, especially if it is something as serious as killing the family pet.
